About National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)

The National Board for Technical Education is a principal organ of Federal Ministry of Education specifically created to handle all aspects of Technical and Vocational Education falling outside University Education. It was established by Act No. 9 of 11th January, 1977.

In addition to providing standardised minimum guide curricula for technical and vocational education and training (TVET), the Board supervises and regulates, through an accreditation process, the programmes offered by technical institutions at secondary and post secondary levels. It is also involved with the funding of Polytechnics owned by the Government of the Federation of Nigeria.

Our Vision is to Uphold the ideals of a free, united and egalitarian society and promote good quality technical and vocational education; a system that is flexible and accessible to all for the purpose of producing competent and relevant technological manpower needed for sustainable national development.

Our Mission is to promote the production of skilled/semi-skilled technical and professional manpower, to revitalize, and sustain the national economy, reduce unemployment and poverty through the setting and maintenance of high standards, provision of current and reliable information for planning and decision making, sourcing and disbursing of funds and adequate linkages with industry.

About UNESCO-NIGERIA TVE Revitalization Project

The Project is a collaborative initiative between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Its major objective, in the first phase, is to support the Nigerian Federal and States education authorities in their efforts to revitalise, reform and expand Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) to meet the present and future needs, for rapid socio-economic development, of the nation.

The curricula presented are part of a continuous review of TVE curricula (at both Secondary and Tertiary levels) undertaken by the Project in order to address one of its fundamental objectives - the need to update and upgrade TVE curricula.

The main objective of the project, in its first phase, are to support the Federal and States education authorities in their efforts to revitalize, reform and expand TVE to meet the present and future needs for rapid socio-economic development of the nation. In addition the Project was expected to:

(a) Support the training and development of TVE managers, technical   teachers and other technical personnel;

(b) Review and update TVE curricula and prepare curricula for new disciplines and for other target groups;

(c) Introduce Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education in all aspects of Technical and Vocation Education and Training (TVET); and,

(d) Support the identification and preparation of feasibility studies and project documents for further projects to strengthen the development of TVET in Nigeria.

The objectives were effectively addressed by the first phase of the Project, Within the period 2001 - Aug. 2007, the Phase I of the Project was able to:

1. Establish six staff development centres for TVE staff training, with the seventh at the Board’s secretariat. These provide continuous staff development and capacity building activities for the sub-sector. The number of TVE staff trained was 8648. This is not inclusive of the training arrangement between the NE ZC at Bauchi with the National Teachers Institute (NTI), under which some 488 teaching staff have obtained teaching qualifications in education

2. Equip the seven SDCs with VSAT, Computers, document production and presentation facilities

3. Initiate the review of TVE curricula, and so far over 57 No. curricula have been reviewed and made available to stakeholders, in digital and hard copies. ICT and Entrepreneurship Education have been fully incorporated into all TVE curricula

4. Organise a number of national and international workshops aimed at training the trainers in TVE
