NBTE AND FEDERAL POLYTECHNICS RECEIVED GRANT FROM THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION POST-BASIC (STEP-B) PROJECT

The Federal Government of Nigeria through Federal Ministry of Education has processed a $180 million World Bank facility to support development of Science and Technology Education at the Post-Basic level. The project development objective is for the Nigerian Federal Post Basic Education and Research sub-sector to produce more and better qualified graduates, and higher quality and more relevant research.

Several proposals have been developed, reviewed by the Technical Review Committee (TRC) and have been approved by the National Project Steering Committee (NPSC). 55 Post-Basic Education Institutions (PBEI’s) have received the first part of the STEP-B funds and have commenced implementation of their various projects. The TVET sector has 11 beneficiaries.

THE NEED FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATOIN FRAMEWORK (NVQF) IN NIGERIA:

DEVELOPMENT OF ICT-BASED CURRICULUM FOR TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (TVET) IN NIGERIA

 

 

The Board organised two STEP-B Sensitisation and Project Implementation Support Workshops held in NBTE Kaduna, for all the Federal Polytechnics in the North central, North East and North West geopolitical zones of the country and The Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, for all the Federal polytechnics in the South East, South South and South West zones of the country.

 

A Study Tour to South Korea was also undertaken by the NBTE National Vocational Qualifications Framework team and some of the stakeholders from the Federal Ministry of Labour and the National Directorate of Employment. During the tour, the team visited the Korean Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET), the Human Resources Development Institute of Korea, the Human Resources Development Service of Korea and the Korea Polytechnic II College Incheon campus. Very fruitful discussions were held with possible collaborations to be developed.

 

Also the Board has also organised two proposal writing workshops for all the Federal Polytechnics in collaboration with Kaduna Business School with the hope of building and strengthening capacity to develop grant wining proposals from the Technical and Vocational Education sector.

  

The way forward:

 

·         The Board is expected to conclude all the other activities detailed in the current approved work plan’;

·         Monitor all the beneficiary institutions by providing implementation support visits;

·         Bring more Federal Polytechnics on board the STEP-B project;

·         Handle trainings for all the project teams of the beneficiary institutions and the Board;

Develop more proposals for funding under the STEP-B project .
